PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Rhode Island women's basketball player Safi Mojidi (Silver Spring, Md.) was honored with the Rhode Island Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year award at the second-annual Cox RI Sports Awards Presented by Amica. The event was held Wednesday night, June 18, at the Providence Performing Arts Center.
Mojidi, who previously was honored as the Rhode Island Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Year, led the Rams in scoring this past season, averaging 12.2 points per game. She connected on 51 three-pointers during her final year in a Rhody uniform and finished her career as the school's all-time three-point field goal leader (185). She also holds the top spot in career minutes played (3,829), ranks second all-time with a .796 free-throw percentage and is third all-time in scoring (1,601) and assists (354).
"Safi has been a standout student-athlete here at URI and I am extremely proud that she has herself in position to receive this award," said head coach Tom Garrick. "This is a young lady who shows leadership skills both on and off the floor and is a credit to her family and her community. An exemplary player but an even better person, she has represented the University of Rhode Island in a complete and unwavering fashion."
A three-time All-Atlantic 10 selection, Mojidi also represented her native Nigeria at the 2007 FIBA African Championship for Women.
