CHICAGO - UMass soccer freshman Stuart Amick has been selected as a member of the U.S. Under-20 Men's National Team. The team will train and play in two games from Feb. 19-24 in New Orleans. Amick was an integral member of the Minutemen's historic run through the NCAA Tournament and berth to the NCAA College Cup. A midfielder for UMass, Amick will play as a defender for the National Team.
Amick finished the 2007 season with five goals and two assists for 12 points - third best on the team. Two of his goals were game-winners. In the NCAA Tournanment, he scored goals against Boston University in the first round and against Illinois-Chicago in the Elite Eight. He also had an assist in the third round game against Central Connecticut State. For the year, he started 19-of-25 games played.
The U.S. Under-20 Team, made up entirely of collegiate players, will gather in New Orleans on Feb. 19 and play two games in a four-team event. On Saturday, Feb. 23 the U.S. will face the Honduras U-20 MNT, and on Sunday will face either the New Orleans Shell Shockers or Victoria, a youth team from Honduras. The two Saturday winners will match up on Sunday, while the losing teams will meet in a consolation match.
Four members of the 2007 U.S. Pan American Team will be in New Orleans as Daniel Cruz, Greg Eckhardt, Warren Gross, and Peri Marosevic all traveled to Rio de Janeiro last summer.
Gross and Marosevic, who attend Penn State and Michigan, respectively, are two of the Big Ten's five representatives. Rounding out the Big Ten contingent are Richard Balchan and Daniel Kelly from Indiana and Michigan State's Spencer Thompson. The ACC boasts four representatives, including Ike Opara, who was a member of Wake Forest's NCAA Championship team.
