PHILADELPHIA, PA - Maine senior defensive end Matt King, who leads the Conference in sacks and tackles for loss, was one of eight student-athletes from the Atlantic 10 Football Conference named to the 2006 Walter Camp Football Foundation's All-America Team.
King registered 18 tackles behind the line of scrimmage and 11.5 sacks en route to earning first-team All-Conference honors in 2006. The Stoughton, MA, native was joined on the All-America first-team defense by senior defensive back James Ihedigbo of Massachusetts and James Madison senior linebacker Akeem Jordan, the 2006 Atlantic 10 Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior wide receiver David Ball of New Hampshire was named to the Walter Camp All-America first-team offense for the third consecutive year, while teammate Ricky Santos earned his second straight first-team honor. Joining Ball and Santos on the first team were James Madison senior tackle Corey Davis, senior tight end Ben Patrick of Delaware and Hofstra junior placekicker Rob Zarrilli.
James Madison and New Hampshire were among five I-AA programs to place multiple standouts on the 25-member team, with Appalachian State placing three players on the team. Massachusetts will face the defending champion Mountaineers on Friday at 8:00pm in the finals of the 2006 NCAA Division I Football Championship.
With eight student-athletes named to the 2006 Walter Camp Football Foundation's All-America Team, the Atlantic 10 had the most players selected of any I-AA conference for the second straight year.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an Al-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football
Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting All-America teams for 1-A and 1-AA.
